Home / Health / Support Groups for Parents of Drug Addicts- Where to Find Them and Additional Resources

Support groups are not only an excellent resource for addicts, but they are a valuable asset for friends and family of addicts, as well. Addiction is a disease that can be destructive to relationships, reputations, and future opportunities. As a parent it is extremely hard to watch your child become an unrecognisable person, and this can feel defeating. Support groups for parents of drug addicts seek to provide support from professionals and other families struggling with the same issues. Additionally, these groups are available in person and online.

If you have a loved one suffering from drug addiction, it is essential to find a group of people that can relate to your concerns. There you will learn where to find family support groups and what resources will be available to you.

Where to Find Support Groups for Parents of Drug Addicts

Support groups for parents of drug addicts are available nationwide. While most support groups will meet in person, there are also online support groups available to join. Family support groups can be found through addiction support groups, churches, counseling services, and word of mouth. Some programs will provide resources to parents of drug addicts that wish to develop their own support groups. There are also national-level programs that parents can contact to locate local support groups through their operations. Two examples of these programs are PAL and NAR-ANON Family Groups.

  • PAL- Parents of Addicted Loved Ones is a nationwide parent support group that helps parents find guidance, addiction education, and resources throughout their time in need. Advisors will help you find local support groups for you to attend.
  • NAR-ANON Family Groups- The NAR-ANON Family Groups are foundations that help family and friends of drug addicts find support from professionals and other families in the same circumstances. This program offers virtual and in-person support groups to families in need.

Family support groups are free to attend and are typically funded by donations. This allows families to focus their financial needs on rehabilitation programs and other resources to help their children. Parents of drug addicts can find comfort and relation to other parents within these groups. Though the feeling of isolation is common during this time, support groups will help parents realize they are not alone.

Resources Available to Friends and Families of Drug Addicts

Addiction education is the most crucial resource, as it can teach you how to understand and communicate with your child. Other resources may include counseling services, rehabilitation references, and recovery education. Furthermore, these resources will help you through your child’s dependence and provide your family with valuable information to help fight addiction.
