Baby shower is an occasion to mark the arrival of the soon-to-be-born baby and is celebrated by throwing a party for the woman who is soon to become a mother. It is celebrated in most cultures across the world and is known by different names. However, it is mostly meant to be an occasion where only female guests are invited. The party is hosted by a family member or a close female friend of the mother-to-be, and the expecting mother is "showered" with small gifts. Sometimes, a baby shower is celebrated after the birth of the baby.
While hosting a baby shower can be fun, it can also get a tad bit expensive at times, more so if you're expecting a considerable number of guests. In such a scenario, using homemade stuff to decorate the venue, can bring down the costs without bringing down the fun element!
Homemade Decoration Ideas for Baby Shower

Here are some DIY ideas for decorating the venue for a baby shower, that you're sure to love. You can easily create these items of decor, using everyday objects that are easily available. So, let's have a look!
Ideas for Decorating the Room
In this section, we shall look at some ideas to decorate the walls and floors of the room where the party is to be held.
Party Balloons
Add Color with Balloons
Balloons are the simplest way to add a fun element to your room decor. Just get hold of the most brightly colored balloons in town, and voila! You're ready to transform the venue into a children's wonderland! You can use balloons in countless ways to decorate the room. You can also create a theme by using bunches of balloons in one or more colors. For example, if you are hosting the event after the birth of the baby, you can use pink balloons if the baby is a girl, or blue ones if it is a boy.
Stuff On Clothesline
Display Cute Stuff on a Clothesline
Wondering what's a clothesline got to do with decorating your venue for a baby shower? Well, we're not talking about the clothesline as we know it. Instead, what we mean here is an interesting twist to this everyday object. All you need to do is just put up a rope across the length or width of the room above a certain height so that it doesn't end up restricting the movement of the people in the room. Now, use your creativity to decorate the rope just as you'd like it to appear. For starters, you can wind colorful ribbons over it, and hang a few stars on it. You can also put up colorful baby clothes; or banners with words like, "It's a baby boy", "We welcome the baby", etc.
Colorful Paper Flowers
Use Pretty Paper Flowers
You can create beautiful works of art using paper, and anyone who knows a thing about origami would agree with me on this one. To get started, all you need to do is go through some origami tutorials online, and grab some colorful paper. You can make colorful flowers like the one shown on the left, or turn colored tissue paper into cute pompoms. Once you're done, use strings to hang them from the ceiling to give the room an instant colorful makeover. You can even paste some on the walls, or place a few on the table where food is served.
Colorful Umbrellas
Colorful Umbrellas Are Cute
For this, you can either use small kids' umbrellas or go for those miniature umbrellas that are used to decorate cocktail glasses. The image on the right shows cocktail umbrellas in many bright colors, and these can be interestingly used to decorate the table as well. For the room, you can use decorated umbrellas and hang them upside down from the ceiling. Use tassels and ribbons to make the umbrellas appear pretty. If you're planning to host the baby shower in the evening, you can create a surreal ambiance by placing a small light bulb inside each one.
Baby Blocks
Throw in Some Baby Blocks
If the birth of a baby is what you're celebrating, how can baby blocks be far behind? These blocks have the letters of the alphabet on them, and can be intelligently used to "write" messages such as, "Congratulations", "We Welcome the Baby", or simply the words, "Baby Shower". You can use blocks in many ways to decorate the venue. Place them on the table or stick them on the rope that we talked about earlier. In case you don't have these blocks at home, you can get them from the local toy store. However, if you wish to make them yourself, you can go ahead and cut out the surfaces from cardboard and stick them together to form cuboid structures. Cover the cubes with colorful paper, and you're ready to go! You can use this simple method to create blocks of any size.
Paper Chain
Add Chains of Color
o, you have put up all items of decor, and yet you feel that something's missing? Well, then paper chains can come to your rescue, as they can be used to "fill" the blank areas to achieve more of a balanced look! What's more, they are really easy to make, and you can make these in a jiffy! Just make them in different designs and let them hang loose on the walls, or use them to decorate the windows. You can use your creative skills to make chains in a host of colors and designs. There are tutorials on the Web to help you with this endeavor of yours!
Ideas for Decorating the Table
Diaper Cake
Place a Cute Diaper Cake
Now, a diaper cake is a must-have for a baby shower for more reasons than one. Firstly, it is made up of stuff that a mom-to-be will soon find very useful (for those who haven't been able to figure out yet, it is made up of diapers!). Secondly, no other centerpiece can be as relevant to the occasion of a baby shower, as it is beautiful. Thirdly, it gives you a good reason to put forth your creative skills for everyone to admire. Need more reasons? Well, a diaper cake is really easy to make, and you'd need nothing else but a few tassels, ribbons and pretty bows to put everything in place (not to forget the diapers!). It is made by rolling the diapers and using them to form layers similar to that of a tiered wedding cake, with the bows and ribbons serving as the icing. Get the picture?
Stuffed Teddy
Furry Friends are Welcome
How can any event that is even remotely related to children, be complete without its own share of soft toys? In fact, the easiest way to add life to any room is to have these furry "creatures" smiling from every corner! A big, cute teddy bear can be a great idea for a centerpiece for the dinner table, and what's more, will serve as a great gift for the mother-to-be. However, it requires skill to make that cute and cuddly soft toy, and hence, this idea might be a little difficult for some.
Fruit Decoration
Let Fresh Fruits Do the Talking!
A nicely decorated fruit basket can be the perfect idea for a baby shower centerpiece. However, instead of the plain, old basket, you can opt for something interesting. For instance, you can carve out a miniature baby carriage from a watermelon, as shown in the image alongside. Just draw the outline of the baby carriage on the fruit, and cut out the shape as shown. Next, use a knife to scoop out the pulp of the fruit till it's entirely hollow. Now, fill the hollow watermelon with small fruits such as berries, grapes, cherries, etc. You can even arrange the fruits to form the shape of a baby. For the wheels, you can use slices of sweet lime, and attach them to the "baby carriage" using toothpick. Once it is ready, gear up for some great complements coming your way!
Flowers
Add Beauty with Fresh Flowers
What can be a better way to decorate the table for any occasion than using a few fresh flowers? This holds true for a baby shower as well. If you have a theme in mind, you can pick the most prominent color and use flowers of that color. The image alongside shows a simple arrangement where flower vases are lined up in a row on the table, with a bunch of colorful balloons visible in the background. Keeping up with the spirit of the occasion, you can use baby food jars instead of flower vases. Throw in some baby-themed confetti to complete the look!
Baby Photo
Place Photographs of Smiling Babies
A baby shower is all about celebrating the birth of a baby, so decorating the venue with photographs of babies can be a cool idea indeed! If you're throwing the baby shower after the birth of the baby, you can take a few smiling snaps of the baby, choose the one in which he/she appears the happiest, and put this photograph in a cute frame. However, you can use random pictures of babies as well. Just make sure that a smiling baby is all that people see in the frame. You can either place one frame as a centerpiece or opt to place several frames along the edges of the table.
These were some suggestions on homemade baby shower decorations for you. Try to come up with unique and innovative ideas and decorate the baby shower venue in a beautiful way. All the Best!
